Department “Literary Lviv”
Exposition of Lviv Historical Museum “Literary Lviv in the 1st half of the 20th century” was opened in autumn 1992. It is housed at five-room apartment at Guardiyska St., 18 (built in 1937-1939 according to the project of Zygmunt Sperber). The aim of the museum is to show literary Lviv in the 20th century during the contradictions in politics, during social conflicts which were the background for developing the literature of the region. On the territory of about 100 square meters cultural and literary life of the city in the late 19th – early 20th centuries is reflected due to museum facilities.
The exhibition creates a spiritual bridge from the past into our present. The museum represents original furniture, engravings, photographs, paintings, postcards, posters of contemporary city. The basis is the funds of Lviv Historical Museum. Small area created the chamber of the Museum. The number of visitors is limited – up to 15 people. In an ordinary apartment literary and cultural life of our city during the 1st half of the 20th century is reflected and at the same time the aura of the house is remained. Interiors of the rooms create the illusion of presence, feeling of that time; they breathe cosiness of the rooms, reflect the background and the spirit of the era, to what the museum is devoted. Ukrainian modern, “molodomuzyvtsi,” poetry of Sich riflemen, mutual influence of Galician and Upper Dnieper region artists, works of forbidden and repressed poets and writers, famous Ukrainian names in emigration - this is not a complete list of themes represented in the museum. The exhibition does not aim at complete revealing of the literary process; it highlights only some of its fragments, the history of some individuals.
The museum also operates as a kind of art salon, it is a meeting place for creative young people and intellectuals, it is the centre of national and cultural education of youth in the best traditions of Ukrainian culture.
